‘Wool Hurts’ Message Taken to the Streets at Fashion Week
As Australian Fashion Week kicks off in Sydney, stencilled outlines of sheep have appeared on the ground surrounding the Carriageworks venue, directing the public to a new website: WoolFacts.com.
How much do you know about the lives – and untimely deaths – of the animals your clothes are made of?
The newly launched site is a trove of information about the wool industry and its impact on the animals and land it exploits.
“From selectively breeding sheep for profitable characteristics and slaughtering them when their coats become brittle to clearing land for pastures and exterminating native species, there are facts about wool that make it uncomfortable to wear,” the site reads.
“The wool industry spins stories about sheep who are eager to be sheared for fashion that’s good for the Earth. But how much of this is true, and how much is just marketing? WoolFacts.com provides an in-depth look at the industry, taking you through the issues affecting animals, the environment, and workers at each step of production.”
The Future of Fashion Is Vegan!
Just as fur has gone the way of the clog and animal-derived leather is losing a battle to alternatives made from mushrooms, pineapple leaves, and cacti, the future of wool is vegan.
These stencilled outlines and the website they promote are a sign of the shifting times. There are many alternatives to sheep’s wool, and more are being developed all the time. Don’t believe us? Check out this list!
The clothes we wear are an expression of who we are. Let’s choose to be kind.
