Environmental Activists Make a Splash for World Vegan Day
Holding signs that read, “50 Baths = 1 Steak”, two PETA supporters shared a bathtub at Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast today to celebrate World Vegan Day and let passers-by know that the best way to conserve water and help the environment is to go vegan.
It takes about 15,500 litres of water to produce 1 kilogram of beef, compared with just 1,000 litres to produce 1 kilogram of wheat. A UN report calls the livestock sector “a key player in increasing water use” and “probably the largest sectoral source of water pollution”.
A study of water consumption found that a vegetarian diet can reduce Australian households’ total water usage by up to 35 per cent. In addition, a Worldwatch Institute report concluded that 51 per cent of global greenhouse-gas emissions are caused by animal agriculture.
