Kangaroos – The Slaughter of our National Emblem
Kangaroos are slaughtered by the millions every year; their skins are considered prime material for soccer shoes.
Australian government guidelines generally recommend that hunters shoot the animals. However, for orphaned joeys and for adult kangaroos who are wounded, it recommends that they be decapitated or hit sharply on the head “to destroy the brain”.
Many wounded kangaroos flee, only to die a slow, agonising death from their injuries, while young joeys die of starvation because they are unable to fend for themselves after their mothers are slaughtered.
After learning about the cruelty involved in obtaining kangaroo skins, soccer star David Beckham switched to shoes made from synthetic materials in 2006 – and anyone with a heart should do the same.
