PETA Asks New WA Premier to Make Live-Export Ban a Top Priority
As Mark McGowan wraps up his first week as Western Australia premier, PETA have fired off a letter urging him to stand by his principles and stop the state’s live-export industry.
The letter comes as federal independent MP Andrew Wilkie presents a bill to parliament proposing to ban live-animal exports altogether.
Every year, Australia exports millions of live animals to countries in the Middle East and Asia – a gruelling journey that may take weeks in the often searing heat. Many die from dehydration, starvation, or disease before they reach their destination, and those who survive may be subjected to abuse and slaughter methods that would be illegal in this country.
